Scott,1 no 2 no 3 no. You need to take the air box off. Make sure the
breather tube under it  goes back in place. Lift the coolant catch
bottle up out of the way and it will be easier to put back together.
Otherwise you will have oil all over your motor. Of  course nothing wil
rust. Maybe Paul B. should try this. Then his bike wouldn't look like it
went for a swim. Any other problems send me your # and I wll get back to
you.

It sure sounds like that could be your problem. Can you hear the V-boost
cycling when you turn on the key? If so locate the round connector under
the left scoop. Turn on the key and when you hear the V-boost open and
pause unplug it. You now have full time V-boost and should be able to
tell if it makes a drastic difference in your bike.
