Subject: Vmax Starter Woes (the Fix)

I just recently fixed up my starter because of slow starting. I was sure
something was cooked, NOT. If anyone is having a problem with slow starting
try this:
Hindle only: remove the two front pipes. Other I don't know.
Remove the water conduit assembly
Remove the two bolts for the starter
Disassemble starter
Inspect commutator, if a blackish color clean with 400-600 grit sand paper
until copper color
Inspect Mica grooves clean with a hack saw blade (1-2 passes only)
My brushes were not to worn but I replaced them anyway
Voila a new starter :)
I might have left out a few things. If i did feel free to add to this how
to

Right except there is 1 thick wire, with a rubber boot over a nut
attaching it to side of the starter.

Not that hard, you have to drain the coolant though obviously, and
remove the hoses that are in the way, and remove a screw and twist that
pipe out of the way.

O-rings. Even on the starter snout.

My 1990 had a weak starter a while back; they were still using the old
2-brush design then. Replaced it & been fine ever since.

No, Paul, the new 4-brush setup will not fit the old 2-brush housing...been
there, tried that...
