Thought this might interest you. In talking with PCW racing, they said that when you change oil on a V-Max, after you drain the oil, it takes 25 seconds for the engine to pump the oil through the system to get it to the rod bearings. They suggest removing all 4 spark plugs and crank the engine for 10 seconds, wait a few seconds, and then crank it for 10 seconds again before starting to be sure there is enough oil in the system before starting. They said the absolute worst thing you can do is change the oil, fire up the bike and then rev it up before 30 seconds have passed. Jim Riordan ----------- Myself, I don't worry about it. But mecahnically leaving the plugs in would be harder on the starter, battery and the engine would crank over much slower than if the plugs were out. WARNING. You guys thinking about cranking over your engines with the plugs out. Ground those plug wires! If you don't, the high voltage looks for a spot to go to ground, most likely through the internal insulation of your coils! -- Paul Sayegh ------------------- Subject: Re: cranking with out spark Message-ID: <006301bdf730$70bd7fc0$8294f7c7@terry.yknet.yk.ca> If you want to be able to crank your Max without spark (to pump your oil): 1. For the early ignition machines, half tap the black/white wire coming out of the ignitor box to an on-off switch (eg toggle or rocker), connect the other side of the switch to a ground. You can use the sidestand relay connections - which terminates the black/white and a black wire ground. The relay is located just in front/below of box. Click your switch on (close circuit) = no spark. 2. For the digital machines, install an on-off switch on the blue/yellow wire coming out of the ignitor box. Click the switch off (open circuit) = no spark I would still recommend cranking with the spark plugs removed and an open throttle. Do not crank longer than 8 seconds at a time. Do not let your starter get hot... cheers, Terry
