Hey Rob,
    Some of the other guys may have some easier ideas to check out first.
But i had problems on an '85 that I finally traced to the ignition switch.
You get to it by removing the right side scoop. Then disconnect the plate
that holds the radiator fill. The ignition has two 10mm bolts, top and
bottom. Turn the switch over and disconnect the back. Pull the switch itself
from the lock and clean all the contact points.. Like  I said, you may want
to check some easier things, I think Vern had similar problems, didn't you
