Here are the responses: Alabama - Recommended: Gulf Coast Region, Talladega Mountains, dams along the Tennessee River. Advised Against: Birmingham congestion, all of the southern half, I-65. Alaska - Recommended: "Everywhere the roads go", Kenai Penninsula to Homer and Seward, sidetrip to Valdez, Highways 1, 3 and 4 (aka. "The Loop") Advised Against: Haul road to Deadhorse, Rt 3 to Fairbanks. Favorite Roads: Rt 1 to Homer, Delta to Summit Lake on the Richardson Hwy., Rt 1 from Glennallen to Palmer. Arizona - Recommended: North Rim of Grand Canyon, "Anywhere on state, county or Indian roads outside of suburban areas," along the Mogollon Rim, Oak Creek Canyon. Advised Against: I-8 from Yuma to Casa Grande, Colorado River area in summer, Pheonix, all Interstates. Favorite Roads: US-666 from Clifton to Springerville, US 89A from Prescott to Flagstaff, Hwy 67 from Jacob Lake to the North Rim. Arkansas - Recommended: Ozarks in northern Arkansas, Ouchita Moutains west of Hot Springs. Bul Shoals area around Mountain Home. Advised Against: southeastern section along the Mississippi, Little Rock. Favorite Roads: Hwy 7 - Hot Springs to Harrison, Hwy 23 - Eureka Springs to Ozark, AR-88/OK-1 - the Talimena Skyline Drive. California - Recommended: Seirra Passes, northern half of state, coast north of San Francisco. Advised Against: Los Angeles freeways (highest negative vote in entire survey!) Death Valley in summer, Sierra passes in winter, I-5 south of Sacramento. Favorite Roads: Hwy 1 along coast, Hwy 49 through Gold Country, Avenue of the Giants (off Hwy 101 near Weott), Hwy 89 throught Lassen Nat'l Park, Tioga Pass Road through Yosemite, Los Angeles Crest Hwy (Hwy 2). Colorado - Recommended: Loop through San Juan Mtns (Telluride, Ouray, Silverton, Durango), Estes Park, High Rockies along Continental Divide. Advised Against: eastern half of state, I-25 from Ft. Collins to Pueblo, Denver traffic. Favorite Roads: US 550 ("Million Dollar Highway"), US 34 through Estes Park, Hwy 125 - Granby to Walden, Hwy 67 - Woodland Park to Deckers, Hwy 14 along Poudre River. Connecticut - Recommended: Western CT along side roads, northwestern part of state. Advised Against: I-95 between Greenwich and New Haven, Central CT, Hartford area. Favorite Roads: US 7 - New Milford to Canaan, Hwy 20 - - Granby to Winstead, Hwy 169 - to Woodstock. Delaware - Recommended: forests in southern part of state, Trap Pond St. Park. Advised Against: Wilmington area, US 13 through Dover. Favorite Roads: US 9 - Laurel to Delaware City. Florida - Recommmended: back roads in the Panhandle, the Keys. Advised Against: southern coast - West Palm Beach to Miami, Jacksonville area, Hwy 19 along west coast, Florida Turnpike. Favorite Roads: US A1A through Daytona, US 1 (Overseas Highway) - Florida City to Key West, Hwy 27 (Everglades road), Hwy 98 - Perry to Pensacola. Georgia - Recommended - northern GA forests, Georgia coast from Savannah to St. Marys. Advised Against: Atlanta area (mentioned unanimously by Georgia reporters! ) Favorite Roads: US 129 - Fizgerald to Macon, US 136 - Gainesville to Trenton, Hwys 60/180 - Suches and environs. Hawaii - Recommended - Big Island, Maui. Advised Against: downtown Honolulu, Waikiki area. Favorite Roads: Oahu Hwy 99 - to Waialua, Oahu Hwy 72 - - around KoKo Head to Hawaii Kai, Hawaii Hwy 200 (Saddle Road), Maui Hwy 378 - to Haleakala Crater. Idaho - Recommended: anyplace north of Boise, Hell's Canyon area, area enclosed by Salmon River. Advised Against: "gets pretty lonesome out around Atomic City" (west of Idaho Falls). Favorite Roads: US 12 - Lewis and Clark trail over Lolo Pass, Hwy 71/86 to Hell's Canyon, "any little road that goes into the mountains is fun in Idaho." Illinois - Recommended: northwestern IL around Galena and Hanover; southern area; Garden of the Gods - Shawnee Nat'l Forest; along the Illinois River; along the Mississippi River. Advised Against: central part of state, anywhere close to Chicago (Cook county). Favorite Roads: Great River Road (series of hwys - 84, 92, 96, 3, etc. - which follow the Mississippi River south), Hwy 2 - from Rockford along Rock River, US 30 West, Hwys 3, 145 and 1 through Shawnee Nat'l Forest. Indiana - Recommended: Western area around Park County and Wabash River, south-central around Brown County, any section of Hoosier Nat'l Forest. Advised Against: 50-mile radius around Indianapolis or Gary, north-central part of state. Favorite Roads: Hwy 135 through Brown County to Kentucky border, Covered Bridge routes in Park County, Hwy 156 along Ohio River to Madison, Hwy 67 from Martinsville south, almost any north-south two-laner in the Hoosier Nat'l Forest areas. Iowa - Recommended: anywhere in the four northeastern counties, all rural hard-surfaced roads, eastern part of state along Great River Road. Advised Against: north-central IA, northwestern IA, southern IA especially along Hwy 2, Des Moines area. Favorite Roads: Hwy 26/US 52/Hwy 99/US 61 - Great River Road, any backroad in northeastern quadrant. Kansas - Recommended: northeastern section along Missouri River, rolling country around Council Grove. Advised Against: western section from I-135 west, central part of state. Favorite Roads: Hwy 99 through Flint Hills, Hwy 2 - Wichita to Kiowa, Hwy 7 - White Cloud to Leavenworth (Great River Road). Kentucky - Recommended: Red River Gorge, "the whole state," anywhere in the Boone Nat'l Forest, area around Cave Run Lake, Land Between the Lakes (western KY). Advised Against: Lexington or Louisville, western part of state. Favorite Roads: Hwy 11 through Boone Nat'l Forest, "US 68 north of Lexington in spring with the locust blossoms,", US 421 - Manchester to Richmond, Hwys 119/160 past Black Mtn. Hwy 31 from Lousiville to Mammoth Cave area, Hwy 715 between Hwys 15 and 77 (near Campton). Louisiana - Recommended: Along the Mississippi between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, backroads in The Catahoula Ranger District, Atchafalaya Basin, Northern LA. Advised Against: delta area south of New Orleans, Grand Isle and Avery Island (motorcycles not permitted), area around New Orleans. Favorite Roads: Hwy 10 - Bogalusa to St. Francisville, Hwys 44, 48, 75 along north shore of Mississippi River west or New Orleans, US 90 and sideroads in "cajun country" (Atchafalaya Basin). Maine - Recommended: western mountains around Rangeley Lake, coastal route from York to Bar Harbor, Moosehead Lake Region (central). Advised Against: I-95, all of coast south of Portland, area around Portland. Favorite Roads: US 2 from Canadian border to New Hampshire, Hwy 9 - Bangor to Calais, US 201 - Hinckley to Jackman, US 11 - Sherman to Fort Kent area, Hwy 27 - Kingfield to Canadian border. Maryland - Recommended: Garrett County (far western panhandle), Allegany County (east of Cumberland), eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay, western side of state, along Pennsylvania line. Advised Against: Washington D.C. and Baltimore, Baltimore Beltway, central part of MD, US 50 on eastern shore (near Ocean City Resort area). Favorite Roads: Hwys 550, 77 in Catoctin Mountain area, US 40, 48 through panhandle [note: take Alt 40 - US 40 is now I-68, EFS], Hwys 67, 65, 17 in Harper's Ferry area, Hwy 28 - Rockville to Point of Rocks, Hwy 12/US 113 - Salisbury to Pocomode througth Pocomoke Forest. Massachusetts - Recommended: Western half of state (west of Worcester), "almost anyshere in the western Berkshires", Cape Cod(*). Advised Against: Cape Cod(*), Massachusetts Turnpike, Greater Boston area (especially area around Logan airport), Springfield. Favorite Roads: Hwy 2 (Mohawk Trail), Hwy 9 Northampton to Pittsfield, Loop route on Hwys 2,8,116, 112, Hwy 57 - Feeding Hills to Barrington. (*Note: for the record the Massachutes respondents voted 4 in favor of touring on Cape Cod, 9 opposed to touring on Cape Cod.) Michigan - Recommended: Upper Peninsula, circle tour of Lake Superior, Sleeping Bear Dunes and northwestern lower MI, "most lake shore roads." Advised Against: I-75 and US 24 between Detroit and Toledo, OH; Detroit area, south- central area of lower MI. Favorite Roads: US 2 across Upper Peninsula; US 28 - Munising to Marquette, U.P.; over "Big Mac" (the Mackinac Bridge); following US 31, Rtt 37, Hwy 22 along western shore around Leelanau Penninsula; Hwy 119 on northwestern shoreline. Minnesota - Recommended: Northeastern part of state in forests and along Lake Superior; southeastern section along Mississippi and west to US 52; west- central Minnesota and the lake country, especially near Lake Itasca; headwaters of Mississippi R. Advised Against: metro-Minneapolis; south- western part of state, northwestern part of state between Grand Forks and International Falls. Favorite Roads: US 61 along shore of Lake Superior; US 95 and 61 south from Taylors Falls along Mississippi R. to I-90; US 10 and 71 from Fargo (ND) to Bemidji; Hwy 113 between US 59 and 71: "hilly twisty"; Hwy 1 from Lake Superior to Ely and the forests. New Jersey - Recommended - Delaware Water Gap area; farm and bayside areas in Salem and Cumberland counties; pine barrens around Belleplain. Advised Against: "Everywhere! New Jersey is dangerous with bad roads," "turnpikes, unless you're in a hurry to escape," northeastern and central sections of the state; anywhere along the Jersey coast. Favorite Roads: Hwys 519 and 29 along Delaware R.; Rt 542 through Batsto; Hwys 553 and 49 Millville, Port Norris Bridgeton and Salem. New Mexico - Recommended: Sangre de Cristos and Rock Mtn. ranges north of Santa Fe; west-central forests; Lincoln County.
