Well my GTS started working again, without me ever really finding out the cause. That is until last week. On the way to work the bike shut off again, and low and behold the fuse was blown again. This time it was terminal. I towed it my local dealer and within 2 hours he called and told me the fuel pump had a dead short in it. My GTS has only about 10k miles on it, and I was not very happy. If you have ever priced one they are over $400 from Yamaha. By luck he noticed that the pump looked very similiar to one used in lots of Chevys. He matched it up with one at the local auto parts store that was $125!! It is a Denso Fuel Pump part number P49. It sounds a little different when you turn the key on, but I have put over 200 miles on so far since it was changed and the bike runs fantastic!!! Hopefully this one will last a little longer than the original. Does anyone know of a dealer in the Dallas Fort Worth area that works on GTS's that you would recommend?? The guy who fixed my fuel pump just moved to Salt Lake City and I am not real impressed with person that replaced him. ---------- From: Duckurt@aol.com Date: Wed, 30 Sep 1998 22:30:10 EDT Subject: GTS fuel pump Hi Clan GTS: Thought I would pass along some information that may help one of you not go through some of the bullshit I have been through the past week or two with my GTS. 1. If your fuel pump goes out at about 11,000 miles, do not, I repeat, do not use anything but the OEM. The Yamaha version will set you back just under $500, but it is a one-time investment as opposed to this shit. There's a reason advice received over the internet is free, it is worthless. Unfortunately, I had the service done for me instead of doing it myself. If I were doing it myself, the mission would have been aborted. Here's the problems with the GM (Denso P49) pump that I have ascertained so far: 1. The GM pump is a different size. The mechanic had to re-route wires around it. 2. The electrical connectors are different. You guessed it - rip and strip. 3. Since the 10 amp fuse was apparently not enough, a 15 amp fuse was substituted. AAAAARGH! 4. The new fuel pump has already failed. 5. The service manager said he would never do this again to a GTS. 6. The person who recommended doing the GM substitution to me and the service manager really had not done it to his bike (another GTS) as he implied at the time. After the fact, when I asked him how he liked it, I found that his had been an OEM warranty replacement -- he had just heard about the substitution from the internet.... No, I did not kill him with my bare hands. Too many witnesses. As Nixon said: "trust but verify". This sucks. Now I have to go out and buy an OEM pump for about $500.00 on top of what I have already spent. The owners/operators of this dealership are good friends and I have known them a long time. No grief to them about this matter. The service department spent several additional hours drilling and affixing this large piece of shit to my bike. My friend, trying to be nice, made no money on the part and he made a special trip to an auto parts store to pick it up. He probably lost on the extra time spent in shop hours. As of this moment, my bike does not run, and is going to require some extensive work before it is properly fixed. All around, this is a bad deal and an expensive lesson. I have been around bikes for just about a quarter century, you would think I would have known better. (I was pressed for time, that's why I didn't do it myself, by the way). If any of you are running the Denso pump, go check your fuse box (just behind the seat). Your fuel injection fuse should be 10 amps. I would not take a chance on any more amperage. On the bright side, I have all winter to rewire my bike!! Here's hoping you guys are having more fun with your GTS's than I. I am the original user of the Denso P49 fuel pump. My mechanic another GTS owner recommended it after pricing the OEM part. I gambled and said yes after comparing the prices. Here are the facts: 1. My mechanic had absolutely no trouble installing the pump. 2. My installation uses the original Yamaha wiring and connectors. 3. It does require a 15 amp fuse. 4. The pump is slightly noisier than the OEM pump. 5. The new pump has been in my bike for over a year and now has over 7000 miles on it and works perfect. 6. Very soon it will have out lived the $500 OEM pump. Either I am damn lucky, or you need a new mechanic!
