Yamaha pads are about 85% Metalic they suck for stopping -vs EBC I use them on my V-MAX same pt no. 14 km on max rotors like new .17 bucks at Competition accessories. ---------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 10 Apr 1997 12:49:08 -0400 From: CubbyS@webtv.net (Bob Smith) Subject: Re: better rear brakes don't try any tricks on the rotors before you put the new pads on ,there 's not enough material to cut, a little buffing in the wear pattern by hand with super fine emery just to knock it down a spec. The EBC pad will polish and seat nicely. BTW the front pad best pick -Ferodo all organic 26 bucks--also Competition accessiores. order ahead sometimes a little delay . nice to deal with, I've been out to there complex. smitty. ---------------------------------------------------- Mike Coan wrote: > > OK, so which EBC pads are we using on the GTS. Bob Taylor ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Black pt no.-FA-88 CubbyS@webtv.net (Bob Smith) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I use the EBC black and they're fabulous. Much better than the SBS pads. I don't believe the EBC Greens are available for the GTS. Dunlopads come highly recommended if you can find them for the GTS. Kevin Hawkins // Greensboro, NC AMA #609423 // khawkins@gbncmail.ims.att.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>Why did you not like the SBS? Lack of Bite.........and price. Maybe they've improved from 4 years ago, but at the time I distinctly remember being disappointed after replacing my OEM pads with SBS. When I replaced the SBS with EBC blacks, VIOLA!!! Much better performance. Again, if I could have located a set of Dunlopads I probably would have used them. Kevin Hawkins // Greensboro, NC ---------------------------------------------------- From: "Hawkins, Kevin" >>What was the final verdict on replacement brake pads? >>Are the EBC blacks best? I believe that EBC blacks are organic therefore not harsh on rotors. I'm very pleased with their performance and price. I've heard good things, in general, about Ferodo and SBS but did not like the SBS on my bike. I believe that Mike Coan reported good experiences with SBS on his bike though. >>or had some found they were harsh on the rotors? I believe that the EBC's are easier on the rotors than the OEM which are semi-metallic. >>Like to know what guys with high mileage have used and >>like and how the rotors look. My rotors are light grooved. No big deal really. >>Also what type mileage have you gotten out of the oem and >>aftermarket pads? Because of the track time that I've done on my GTS, I've replaced the pads due to glazing not because they wore out. Others are reporting incredible durability out of the front pads. >>When replacing pads have you bled the brakes to push >>the caliper back into position like the service manual says? I leave one of the pads in place and, using channel locks squeeze the pistons back. The pad is left in place so that you can push all three pistons back on one side together. Just as you begin to squeeze, open the bleeder. Close the bleeder just before you stop squeezing so that no air gets sucked back into the caliper. This might cause the other three piston to push out a little, so be careful. Repeat for the other side and top off the master cylinder with DOT 4. >Kevin Hawkins // Greensboro, NC ---------------------------------------------------- From: CubbyS@webtv.net (Bob Smith) dont touch the bleeders !!!!!!!!!!!!!! EBC black PT NO--er fa88 $17.00 front---Ferodo=organic 400 composit pt no--FDB-865 $27.00--Competition Acc. in Ohio. when changing the pads----, remove one pad ,slowly but firmly push the piston back, install pad ,then repeat the entire process . the only time the piston wont retract is too much fluid in the reservoir caused by someone adding fluid instead of replacing worn pads ,thus think that adding fluid would improve pedal or lever firmness, now you try to push piston back ---- no go !! IF this happens, remove about 1/2 oz with baby ear syringe. if you must open bleeders, there usually is a problem, contaminated fluid, bad retraction seals, air getting in the system ect ---- never open bleeders to change pads if you can't get the piston back let me know i'll put you on the trail of an old tool used by Chrysler for valve spring replacement, which I use ,its cheap and works super----- Smitty ----------------------------------------------------
